This is a list of cool websites that I have found on my many years on the internet. Only smaller, lesser-known websites are added. They're in no particular order.
The internet gets a lot more fun when you go beyond the same 5 websites.
Updated every now and then.
- this one (obviously)
- Are.na -> One of my favorite indie social media sites. Kinda hard to describe what it is, but trust me it's cool.
- Bop Spotter -> A microphone attached to a telephone pole that logs what music people listen to.
- RiboZone -> A science-themed personal website. Full of links.
- AppleRankings -> Exactly what it sounds like.
- thingsithoughttoday -> A collection of interactive poems.
- Last.fm -> Definitely the most popular and oldest on this list, still a great site that more people should know about. It tracks the music you listens to and creates reports, generates recommendations. You can also see what your friends are listening to and view music like a wiki.
- The Sound of Bells -> Plays audio of different types of bells across the world.
- GIFCities -> A project by the internet archive. Search GIFs that were once hosted on GeoCities.
- Observing Time -> View live cameras overlooking national parks, usually used for weather observations.
- Rite.House -> A virtual house where anyone can add rituals that they do regularly and show up on the website.
- Images on the Golden Record -> This collection of images was put onto a disk inside of interstellar space probe Voyager I.
- The Creative Independent -> A newsletter that publishes an interview with a person in the creative industry every weekday.
- neal.fun -> A website for cool interactive games and activities.
- IMG_0001 -> Explore YouTube videos with the default title.
- Perfectly Imperfect -> A small social media site where people post recommendations for food, things to do, or anything else.
- noclip.website -> Explore the maps of various video games without borders or walls.
- Hotline Webring -> A collection of websites that all link together with a previous and next button. They are no longer accepting submissions, but you can still explore the list of sites.
- Insecam -> A website that shows live feeds from unsecured security cameras.
- Stract -> Enter a website and this will find other websites that are similar to it. This is nice to find newsletters and blogs.
- Wiby -> A search engine that only indexes non-commercial simple sites.
- River -> A visual connection engine. Shows you images. Click on an image to see more images like it.
- Flip a real coin -> A camera connected to a motor that shakes a coin. You can click the image to flip the coin.
